part of the All-Canadian gunners that shot down the first German plane on English soil
Born in Victoria in 1921, George Chow enlisted in the Army in 1940 and took basic training at Seaforth Armoury in Vancouver. He then joined the 16th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery in Windsor, Ontario and from there was assigned to a base at Colchester, England. It was near there that his all-Canadian crew shot down the first German plane on English soil.
After his discharge in 1945, he signed up for the Reserves in 1953 and retired 12 years later as a battery sergeant major.
He was presented with the Normandy Campaign 1944 Medal at a Chinese Canadian Military Museum dinner in November 2006.
George passed away on November 6, 2020 — one day after he celebrating his 99th birthday.
