Herby Chan, from Victoria, was posted to No. 3 Wireless School in Winnipeg after his basic training. He obtained 20 words a minute in Morse, learned to operate several transmitter and receiver sets, and flew as the Wireless Operator on one flight.
After graduation, Herby was picked to serve as an instructor in Canada. In addition to assisting WAG trainees in Morse code, Herby was the wireless operator on navigation training. And he worked with Bomb Aimer trainees flying a triangle course on low-flying exercises.
It wasn’t all work for Herby. When one of his assignments required him to do shift work at a local radio station, he decided to take advantage of the opportunity. Herby and a group of musicians formed a band and would sometimes broadcast their music for station dances. They even played on Grand Prairie’s radio station.
